original Greenwich Village icon-a pivotal folk singer who - The Boston Folk Festival -
Throughout an international music career of almost three decades, Rod MacDonald has remained a vital force in the folk music world. With his unique eclectic brand of music that transcends the typical folk genre, he has performed at many of the finest clubs, coffeehouses and major festivals in the U.S. and abroad. As distinctive an entertainer as he is a songwriter, his engaging delivery, musical versatility, timeless ballads and modern folk songs place him in the elite of singer-songwriters performing in North America today. A major figure in the 80s folk renaissance of Greenwich Village, Rod is a prolific communicator well known for his passionate interest in the events that shape our world's societies. His signature song, "American Jerusalem", "a brilliant contrast of rich and poor, of the powerful and the powerless in Manhattan..." (Sing Out! ) remains an enduring classic. More than two dozen notable artists have covered his works, including "American Jerusalem", the enchanting love song, "Coming of the Snow", and the hymn-styled "Sailor's Prayer", to name a few. Influenced by songwriters Phil Ochs, Richard Farina and Bob Dylan, and his own background in journalism and law, Rod is not afraid to get political, take chances and ask tough questions. Approaching the genre differently from most contemporary singer-songwriters, his "protest" songs are non-judgmental narratives that rather invite his audiences to draw their own conclusions. All Music Guide writes that Rod is "... one of the most politically and socially aware lyricists of our time." In his trademark balladeer style, Rod weaves together a tapestry of journalistically insightful lyrics and poetic imagery offering up compelling, entertaining, thought-provoking - and often delicious satirical commentaries. And when his target is politics, he is at his wittiest... Residing in Delray Beach, Florida since the mid-90s, Rod continues an aggressive performing and recording schedule. He has collaborated with well-known south Florida and New York-based musicians, and in 2003 and 2004 formed Big Brass Bed, Cleopatra's Noodle, and the Village Dudes. In addition to performing, Rod enjoys teaching "Songwriting for Self Expression", his 6-week workshop for both experienced and inexperienced songwriters, and was an instructor for Common Ground on the Hill, a two-week workshop sponsored by McDaniel College in Westminster, MD., in July 2004. For the past two years, Rod has been an instructor and lecturer at several Florida Atlantic University locations, teaching his "Folksinging In Modern Times". Rod continues honing his entertainment artistry while adding to an already powerful body of works with songs that "document our times and hit all the right emotional notes" says Mike Stock of Miami's WLRN. Rod's newest CD, "A Tale of Two Americas," was released in the U.S. in June 2005 by Wind River Records, and in Europe in May by Brambus Records. "Recognition", Rod's 2003 release, included "My Neighbors In Delray", a Finalist in the Folk category in the 2003 USA Songwriting Competition. "Rod MacDonald is am ambitious, daring writer, creating catchy songs rich with ideas - some funny, some evocative ... a creator of classics." (The Boston Herald)
